Vermiculite is a natural, inorganic mineral. It is the geological name given to aluminium, iron and  magnesium silicates that are a group of hydrated laminar materials. Vermiculite’s form is in thin, flat flakes that  contain microscopic particles of water and when they are subjected to high temperatures, the flakes expand to many times their original volume. This gives vermiculite its unique property as a material that offers high insulation yet is lightweight.

Vermiculite is pre-expanded by the manufacturer and is widely used as a loosefill packaging material. It pours easily around irregular shaped objects and acts as a cushion against impact, shock and rough handling.

Being inorganic, vermiculite is fireproof. It is also a highly absorbent loosefill material and can safely retain leaks from packed materials. Vermiculite is UN approved for use in transporting hazardous liquids and materials.
