In January we received an interesting letter from Toronto, Canada containing an unusual request. Mr Andrew Alberti explained that he would be arriving in the UK later in the year and would greatly appreciate a factory tour of our Gateshead Sheet Plant facility. The Alberti family were planning a family reunion to celebrate Andrew’s parents’ 50th Wedding Anniversary and relatives were travelling from all round the world, including Toronto & Massachusetts for the event. Andrew requested a family visit to the factory during their stay in the North East.
Andrew further explained that his grandfather, Peter, started the factory on Team Valley Trading Estate in 1939, and ran the factory until he sold it in 1973 to Reed Corrugated Cases. He had last been inside the factory when he was 8 years old and his son, also called Peter and who was also now 8 years old, had shown a ‘significant interest in construction with cardboard’.
Paul Evans, our Operations Director, was delighted, therefore, to welcome 10 relatives of the factory’s founder, Mr Peter Alberti, and to show them around the facility. The family were interested to hear of the changes in the company over the past 38 years, and the automated sample table, in particular, intrigued young Peter!
It was a pleasure to have met the Alberti family, and learning how the Gateshead factory had played such an important part in their history. We were very pleased to have been able to have made their tour of the factory ‘a highlight of our visit to England’.
