Desiccants

When products are transported, exported and stored, they can be damaged by the water vapour naturally present in the atmosphere. Products can go through many changes in climate during transportation and temperature fluctuation can be a significant factor in the formation of condensation. Condensation can lead to corrosion and impairment of product quality. Desiccant sachets can prevent corrosive damage because they absorb moisture from the atmosphere and prevent it from attacking products. Rosewood stocks two types of desiccant: silica gel and activated clay. The material is contained in sachets that are sealed within heavy-duty PE bags and packed into cartons to ensure the desiccants are not activated before use. We would normally recommend one trip per sachet.

  • Silica Gel
Silica gel is a narrow pore desiccant suitable for both dynamic and static drying. It has a high absorption capacity, absorbing around 12% of its weight in water vapour at a temperature of 25ÞC. This absorption rises to 32% at 60% relative humidity. The silica gel remains free flowing and dry, even when maximum capacity is reached. Silica gel is chemically inert and non-toxic and has the ability to absorb other polar gasses such as hydrogen fluoride. Our stock conforms to the requirements of BS 2540, German DIN standard DIN 55473 and US Military Specification MIL-D-3464E.
  • Activated Clay
Activated clay is a naturally occurring, chemically inert calcium aluminosilicate. The calcium-rich montmorillonite clay has a layered structure that allows it to easily absorb water vapour both on the surface of and between its layers. Activated clay retains the characteristics of a dry product even at full capacity and it exceeds the performance criteria required by international specifications.
  • Protects products from water vapour damage.
  • Provides protection in varying climates and temperatures.
  • Retains the characteristics of a dry substance, even at maximum capacity.
  • Pre-sealed cartons avoid activation prior to use.
